WHEN DREAMS COME TRUE

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

As a child, my dream has always been to become a piano teacher.

In high school, I was involved with Interact club led by Mrs Margaret Owens and became the president. We would organise events to interact and perform for our local community. The first place I performed at was the Southern Cross Care Marian Nursing Home in May, 2013. As a group of high school students coming in during their morning tea, I thought maybe we might be disturbing their lives. Some residents appeared tired and uncomfortable and I wasn’t sure whether that’s the place I should be.

We were given name tags and began to set up for the event. The music went live and I could feel the ‘ice break’. Everyone warmed up to the music. I could see many residents nodding their heads or tapping their feet slowly to the beat, and a lady even stood up and sung in excitement “you are my sunshine~!” I felt my heart fill with warmth as tears circled my eyes. That was when I decided: I will do something like this with my students in the future.

After graduating university, Horizon Music Academy was born. There were many challenges with starting up. One was designing student certificates for their first visit to Parramatta Aged Care. I was not so good with designing, and neither did I realise that most certificates have an official sticker on them. It was my friend Melody Zheng who pointed this out to me and assisted in creating the HMA stickers. We began to plan and create what was necessary for the performance at Parramatta Aged Care. I’m so grateful to Melody for sitting by me and starting these very first steps with me.

I’m so grateful for CT Pai. He always has a critical eye and shares his thoughts and suggestions, improving our certificates and programs. He also showed me how to apply for a domain name and web host. Without his help, this wouldn’t be up for you to view right now. Thanks CT.

When I spoke to Kevin Chan, he was studying architecture after his media degree. I was excited, “wow your dream was to create video content? How amazing would it be to have the students’ progress and performances recorded into videos!” And so the project began and Kevin has kindly filmed and edited our performances last year. Kevin, without your shared enthusiasm this wouldn’t have been possible.

I’m grateful for Johnny Chuang. He has always been silently supporting me. He is the man behind the camera lenses taking all those beautiful photos of your child, including memories of their first performances and their shy expressions.

I’m grateful for Crystal Chuang, our piano teacher and my supportive sister. Without her the concert wouldn’t be as spectacular. Her light brings forth visions and dreams of how incredible piano can sound. Thanks to her for being a regular teacher and substitute, and for guiding your child’s progress.

What inspired me to learn piano was watching my grandmother play as a group of her choir friends sang along. I was six at the time, and the warmth that I felt was what lit the spark in me to undertake this path.

Throughout this journey my dad had worked to support me and my mum had continued to nurture me. During times I was encountering great difficulty and could not overcome particular stages of piano growth, my parents were always there for me. If it weren’t for my parents, none of this would exist. I’m grateful for their unconditional love and support.
